Bewitched
filmed in gloucester, 1970

The famous Gloucester, Massachusetts statue was the focus of an episode on the sitcom BEWITCHED/ABC/1964-72. While Samantha the witch visited the New England area to attend a Witches Convention in historic Salem, her husband Darrin Stephens (Dick Sargent) was enchanted by his mischievous cousin-in-law Serena the witch (Elizabeth Montgomery in a dual role) who turned him into the likeness of a local monument called The Fisherman Statue (official title “The Man at the Wheel”). While Darrin took the place of the statue, Serena gallivanted around town with the reincarnated image of the Fisherman Statue. For the role, Dick Sargent was dressed in a fisherman’s raincoat and hat and then sprayed all over with a rusty green color to simulate the weather worn statue.
The real statue upon which the episode was based stands at Stacey Boulevard in the town of Gloucester, Massachusetts. It was created by Leonard Craske in 1923 for a dedication ceremony honoring the town’s 300th anniversary. The inscription on the statue reads: “They That Go Down To The Sea in Ships.”
The reason why the cast of BEWITCHED traveled to New England was because their Hollywood stage burned down in April 1970. While they rebuilt the show’s filming stage the production cast hit the road filming episodes No. 202 “Salem, Here We Come.” (aired 10-1-70); No. 203 “The Salem Saga” (aired 10-8-70); No. 204 “Samantha’s Hot Bed Warmer” (aired 10-15-70); and the Fisherman’s statue episode “No. 205 ”Darrin on a Pedestal” (aired 10-22-70).

Captains courageous
filmed in gloucester, 1935

One of cinema’s greatest classic adventure stories is director Victor Fleming’s Captains Courageous. It is an adaptation of English novelist Rudyard Kipling’s 1897 work of the same name, and advertised: “As Great as Mutiny on the Bounty” with exciting action sequences, and a heart-felt story of the emerging relationship between an over-privileged and bratty young boy and a humble, common fisherman.
The classic MGM, coming-of-age children’s film acquired four Academy Award nominations (Best Picture, Best Film Editing – Elmo Veron, and Best Screenplay – Marc Connolly, John Lee Mahin, Dale Van Every) with Spencer Tracy taking home his very first Best Actor Oscar (he experienced back-to-back wins when he also won Best Actor the following year for Boys Town (1938)) for his heart-warming performance.

bride 13
filmed in gloucester, 1920

Veteran Western heroine Marguerite Clayton starred in the title role of this 15 chapter Fox serial which was rather obviously inspired by Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. A gang of Tripolitan pirates swooped down and kidnapped 13 wealthy brides, whom they held for ransom. Enter an American Navy lieutenant (John O’Brien), who in chapter 15, “Thundering Vengeance,” managed to rescue Bride 13, Miss Clayton, imprisoned with her sister, Bride 12 (Mary Christensen), in the villain’s submarine. Written by director Edward Sedgwick, who ought to have known better, Bride 13 was basically laughed off the screen and Fox quickly curtailed their serial aspirations. ~ Hans J. Wollstein
